Intro:
Took a break from GK and it’s about time to get back .. decided to revisit something that had been on the shelf for over 20years .. and this turned out to be a very challenging build .
FSS has been around since the mid 80s, and this was the time when GK was the only option for models that has complicated design. Many popular manufacture/ sculptors shining for the good 2 decades ..
Kit Info:
This kit was the 1/144 line by wave, sculptured by Naoki Satoh (佐藤直樹 ) , and I believe it was released in 1993 . WAVE was focusing on their line of 1/144 FSS kits and turned out had a very impressive selection. Mine was purchased over eBay in the early 2000 from some guy in California, being able to find FSS gk kit back then in Canada was a big deal … the kit had been opened / worked on multiple times throughout the years and I’ve finally made up my mind to finish this after 20+ years. The kit contains resin parts, some white metal parts (antenna, hands, face, swords ), 1 spring, and 1 sheet of water slide cal.
The build:
Even tho this is a original cast(and this was my first original cast) , it was still a pain to work with .. the cast quality is kinda poor, things aren’t very precise, most panel lines and details had to be re-scribed (I actually enjoyed it, as that allows me to go through every parts and put myself into the mindset of the sculptor ).
First main challenge would be dealing with myself from years ago .. a lot of the things were poorly done holes / some details had to be re-fill / rebuilt .. it’s kinda fun to visit myself from 20yrs ago and also frustrated at the same time ..
Next surprise was that the mold release agent they used is very nasty … my regular cleaning routine didn’t worked out as hoped and ran into a lot of peeling .. had to put the kit away for 2month .. and striped everything again by having a acetone + lacquer thinner bath .. and still had peeling on certain areas after that ended up just got touched up ..
Water slide decal also tinted , putting it under the sun actually helped a lot .. but ended up most pieces just broke apart …. I managed most of them and had to reprint a small portion on laser printer afterward .. thanks to modern smartphone for capturing a high res image before proceed ..
Colour used:
- White - gx01 white -> xc08 (moonstone pearl)
- Gold - gx02 -> Jumpwind em12
- Under armour / joint : dark blue -> gsi72
- horns) / Leg back armour cover / sword -> gsi28
- silver -> gx214
Thoughts:
Thanksfully the kit was just finished when I’m fully out of patient .. It’s fairly decent overall . The proportion , details are not as fancy as the newer model stuffs , but there’s different kind of appreciation on something that’s hand sculptured ..
