Myself had always been a fan of Alleva Coppolo basses.  Got obsessed years ago when I first try one and I've never looked back.  This is the instrument that ended my first stage of fancy bass adventure and decide to sit down and practice more;  Soon after the 2nd season started, of course to out beat a Coppolo bass, you'll need more Coppolo basses ..   lol ..

Background:
Jimmy Coppolo builds basses, he stated in NYC then moved to California.  In my opinion, this man knows Fender basses better than Leo Fender himself and has archived the receipe of how to build a new bass that sounded like an old Fender, in playable condition and often with a low B string.   Since early 2000, soon many players all over the world noticed that and wanted an Alleva Coppolo bass.

Specs:

  • Alder body / NYC size
  • Maple neck
  • CNL (Caesar Nero Legno / Brazlian rosewood hybrid / Jimmy wood)
  • Professor shot Nitro in Black Charcoal Metallic Flake finish, only 10 of these were made in about 2018
  • AC pickups
  • AC preamps
  • controls are: Vol / Vol / Tone / Hi boos / Lo boost , active/passive switch
  • TB neck profile with 18mm string spacing
  • Hipshot tuners
  • AC bridge

Playability:
Spent some time doing some setups to my liking and that seemed to open things up and man ...  this bass is simply amazing ..  Action can go pretty low buzz free, overall sound are well balanced.  Fretworks are great .   TB neck with 18mm string spacing makes it even easier to play.     simply another great one and they don't come by too often.   This could've been an ultimate bass for many top players out there ...

Sound:
Similar to Brazlian rosewood, CNL is also mid rich but a tad brighter than Brazilian to my ear.   Very sweet sounding, but doesn't sounded as vintage as a old Fender jazz as those had Brazilian rosewood.   The mid just have that depth yet focus.   Alder body with nitro finish keeps the bass open.

Thoughts:
Well ..  there are many Fender inspired instruments from many brands in all price levels, but noone archive it the same as Alleva Coppolo when it comes to jazz basses.    Throughout the years, I'm lucky enough to live close to other bass lovers and had the previledge to try out many of them and still get impressed regularly.

I'm terribly sorry about the sloppy playing on this one.  This bass came by in a hurry .. I wish I could've spend more time with it ....

And yes, I was able to have this bass visiting again for another test drive ..
