They're some luthiers who had been focusing what they've doing and follow the same vision for decades, Rob Allen has been one of them who builds very musical semi-hollow body basses that are loved by many bass players world wide. I’m lucky enough to play the little mouse not long after its bigger brother MB2, they are similar in many way and here’s some little facts between the 2.
Specs:
- 30” Scale length
- 18mm string spacing
- Ash body with Walnut top
- Birds eye maple neck
- Ebony fingerboard with extended thumb rest
- Fishman peizo and preamp with tone control (mini pot accessed from the back)
- Labella black nylon taperwound string
- Weights under 6lbs, feels like …. Nothing ….
Very much like the MB2, this bass is simple yet classy . very open yet organic sounding but way darker. WAY DARKER … you can easily tell they’ve got the same blood, but naturally behave very differently.
Playbility / Sound:
Shorter, but easy to adapt to. After trying a few fretless and upright basses, I believe intonation mainly comes from the player’s ear. String tension is slightly tighter than the mb2, but still takes no efforts to play . Strings are all well balanced and the fishman piezo system is very truthful to the organic wood sound. It’s dark by nature, playing the mouse with the tone wide open, where I had to roll off most of the tone on the mb2 to archive the same sound .
Thoughts:
They are equally fun. Single cutway and extended fingerboard makes this extra sexy. I feel like mb2 has more bite and grinds better , can easily get some funky groove on it . The mouse is more gentle, bigger bottom makes and might fits better naturally on most sideman gigs. Again, they are both versatile on lots of stuffs, Rob’s fretless are highly expressive and musical.
