Dropping some thoughts on this amazing KBP5 CS I once owned between 2021-2023.
Background:
This is a one of a kind instrument. Very special in terms of material selection, finish approach, custom made prototype parts. The build also has a lot of personality from Jimmy himself that makes the instrument extra special.
Specs:
- 1 piece Mahogany body
- Karina neck in Satin finish
- CNL fingerboard
- TV Yellow / Lime Mahogany finish
- Black headstock
- Thicker than usual tort pick guard, squared edge, lacquer finished
- AC pickups
- Passive Electronic
- controls are: Vol / Tone
- Hipshot tuners
- Prototype AC bridge with quick release
Playability:
it’s a joyful instrument to play, the painted satin neck gives a slick feel . The whole bass is well balanced with no dead spots
Sound:
It has a really full and chunky bottom end, slightly scooped but very well controlled low-mid range, and a very sweet sounding high . I think that sweetness came from the tonal quality between the mahogany body and the CNL board mixed in a very nicely way and the hard Karina probably brings that nice dip in the mids to archive the overall tonal quality. The pickups is wounded hot and more sensitive. To me it has that perfect rock bass sound with a set of fresh rounds, it’s big, thick, chunky ,and well resonance .. and it just some really special quality in the air to my ear .. Still works out fantastically well with flats with its solid foundation. I just can’t say enough good thing about it.
Thoughts:
This is a one of a kind .. 1 piece Mahogany body, painted Karina neck ,CNL board .. it’s not built to perfection cosmetically, but it shows a lot of Jimmy’s creativity and personalty …. You don’t see a fender style instrument to get done is this way often ..
